Superplasticizers are primarily used in concrete mixes. Their addition to concrete or mortar mixes allows for the reduction of the water to cement ratio, improving the workability of the mixture.
It enables the production of concrete which has a low yield stress, high deformability and moderate viscosity. This is necessary to ensure uniform suspension of solid particles during transportation and placement (without external compaction) until the concrete sets. The addition of the superplasticizer significantly improves the performance of the concrete. The strength of the concrete increases when the water to cement ratio decreases.
Polycarboxylate Ether Superplasticizer is a new generation kind of admixture, otherwise known as PCEs. The dosage of PCEs is considered quite low at 0.15-0.3% by cement weight and they allow for a water reduction of up to 40%. This is due to their chemical structure which enables good particle dispersion.
